Mentor Graphics Rewards Innovation With 2001-2002 Student Design Contest

WILSONVILLE, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 16, 2001--Mentor Graphics Corporation (NASDAQ:MENT) today announced the details of its 2001 -- 2002 Higher Education Program student design contest.

Through its Higher Education Program, Mentor Graphics offers more than 550 colleges and universities worldwide a way to acquire commercial EDA software for classroom instruction and academic research, to help ensure that engineering graduates are proficient with state-of-the-art tools and techniques. The student design contest, co-sponsored by Sun Microsystems, Inc. and the Mentor Graphics Higher Education Program, is designed to promote innovation and excellence in education for engineering students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

``Mentor Graphics founded the Higher Education Program in 1985 on the belief that the continued success of the electronics industry is dependent upon highly skilled engineers,'' said Julie Schroeder, Manager, Marketing Programs, World Trade Organization, Mentor Graphics. ``For our customers to succeed in the highly competitive global marketplace, they not only need the most advanced design technologies but the engineers who have the necessary training to lead them into the next generation of innovation.''

``We are pleased to be sponsoring the Mentor Graphics® Design Contest that promotes excellence in innovation to engineering students at colleges and universities all over the world,'' says Joerg Schwarz, group manager, Global Education and Research, Sun Microsystems, Inc. ``We wish all of the contestants a great and rewarding experience.'' This year's contest will reward the most innovative design project in each of four technology categories; printed circuit board design, IC/analog mixed signal design, HDL design and system-on-chip design. All categories will be judged for the most complete and innovative design project created by a student or team of students who are enrolled in VLSI classes during the 2001-2002 school year at a university participating in any of the Mentor Graphics Worldwide Higher Education Programs. Cash prizes will be awarded in the amount of U.S. $2000 per category and U.S. $5000 for the grand prize winner. The contest is open to any full-time undergraduate or graduate student who attends a college or university participating in Mentor Graphics Worldwide Higher Education Programs. Entries are due May 31, 2002 and winners will be announced in August 2002.
